Bookcases as Showcases

Well-styled bookshelves can serve as a focal point in your space and make a statement in your home. But, organizing the books and accessories on your shelves in a way that's interesting AND organized takes work. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Showcase your treasures.
Along with your books, display pieces that you're passionate about or create a theme that interests you. Bookshelves are the perfect place to display favorite collections, keepsakes and photographs.

Incorporate color. Adding a splash of color or decorative wallpaper to the back of your bookcase will bring color and pattern into your space and pull the eye in. If you have a white bookcase, consider painting the backdrop a dark color.

Think about layers. When styling your bookshelves, layer objects from front to back to make the shelves appear deeper. Consider adding a special book, painting or photograph to serve as a backdrop to other items ? or, place the item in front, leaning against books.

Think vertical and horizontal. Alternate the way you place books on your shelves by placing some in vertical and others in horizontal position. This helps break up the sea of books and allows you to display accessories on top of them or let those lying fl at serve as bookends.

Cut the clutter. Don't attempt to cram everything onto one bookcase. If you have too much displayed, it's overwhelming to the eye and doesn't showcase your most-prized items well. Small amounts of space give the eye room to breathe and allow the beauty of your books and collectibles to shine. A great way to conceal items such as CDs, DVDs or toys is to use a fabric panel to hide them or fi ll the bottom shelf with colorful storage bins to house your items.
