If your feed lately is full of velvet sofas, crystal lamps, carved mirrors and rugs in jewel tones, you've met Whimsigoth. This spellbinding style mixes a little gothic drama with a lot of whimsy, and it's the perfect mood for the darker, cozier days of fall.

And, luckily, you don't need a haunted Victorian to pull it off. In our recent episode of Seated with Furniture Row, hosts Barb and Jessa explore the cozy, collected world of whimsigoth. From the nostalgic interiors of Practical Magic, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Charmed to approachable updates for your own rooms, their conversation is full of inspiration for making the look your own.

What Exactly Is Whimsigoth?

Think of whimsigoth as gothic style with a wink. Whimsigoth took shape in the '90s, when crushed velvet, celestial prints and flea-market finds filled bedrooms and boutiques, but today's version is more grown-up: it's romantic, a little mysterious and very personal.

Here are the style's greatest hits:

  • Jewel tones and deep neutrals. Forest green, sapphire, plum, mauve and rich brown, warmed up with antique gold.

  • Arches and curves. Arched doors, curved sofas and cabinets that look like gothic windows.

  • Carved wood. Scrollwork, acanthus leaves and hand-carved frames add old-world character.

  • Velvet and faux fur. Soft, touchable textures that beg you to curl up.

  • A little sparkle. Crystal beads, iridescent glass and candle-style lighting add glow.

  • Personality. Royal pet portraits, botanical carvings and bold patterned rugs make the space feel collected over time.

The Living Room: Velvet, Curves & Carved Wood

If you’re shopping for a larger piece, look for a sofa with an ornate or luxurious feature worth building around. A curved silhouette, velvet upholstery in deep jewel tones, channel tufting, or a carved wood frame can give the room its starting point.

Then let the supporting pieces bring different kinds of character. A tall accent chair might add a stately shape, while a compact carved chair creates an inviting corner beside a window. A coffee table with curved legs or a sculptural base can introduce another layer without repeating every detail of the sofa.

*Remember: you don’t have to make every piece equally ornate. A simple, clean-lined sectional can share the room with a decorative mirror, a richly patterned rug, and a lamp with a little shimmer.

  • The contrast gives your favorite details room to stand out!

Make Space for Books, Botanicals, and Beautiful Oddities

A good bookcase holds more than books. It’s a place for the framed fern you made yourself, the little vase from a weekend trip, and the objects that make a room unmistakably yours.

Arched bookcases and glass-front cabinets provide a fitting backdrop for this collected look. Mix upright books with small stacks, give a favorite object its own space, and tuck in botanical artwork or a dried arrangement.

This is also where whimsigoth naturally overlaps with dark academia. Both embrace books, history, rich colors, and collected details.

  • Dark academia puts the literary mood front and center

  • Whimsigoth leaves more room for playful, celestial, and enchanted touches.

Bring a Collected Feel to the Dining Room

Whimsigoth dining doesn’t have to wait for a special occasion. A dining table with sculptural legs, carved detailing, or a warm wood finish can set the scene for everything from morning coffee to a lingering dinner.

  • Build on that foundation with patterned linens, interesting glassware, and a few favorite candlesticks.

  • A display cabinet gives pretty pieces a place to shine, whether you collect vintage china, colorful glass, or small objects with sentimental value.

*And don’t save every treasure for behind glass. One of the episode’s most charming ideas is giving vintage china an everyday job. Let a teacup hold jewelry or a small porcelain bowl collect the little things that usually wander across a countertop. Beautiful pieces can be useful, too.

In the bedroom, start with the feeling you want at the end of the day: soft, inviting, and just a little removed from the ordinary. An arched or tufted headboard brings a romantic shape, while carved wood adds old-world character.

  • If you prefer a lighter room, an antique-white finish can lean into the whimsical side (rich brown furniture creates a moodier foundation).

  • Layer in jewel-toned throw pillows, a cozy blanket, and a bedside lamp with an interesting finish. A patterned rug can connect the colors, while botanical artwork or a small celestial accent adds a personal touch.

*For a child’s room, borrow the storybook shapes rather than the darker palette. Curved beds, decorative posts, and soft textures can create their own kind of enchantment.

Finishing Touches: A Little Glow, a Little Whimsy

A crystal lamp, an ornate mirror, a royal pet portrait that makes you smile. These finishing touches bring the playful side of whimsigoth to life without a whole-room makeover.

  • For lighting, look for iridescent glass, crystal details, or vintage-inspired shapes that add character even when switched off.

  • Try a shimmering table lamp beside your favorite chair or a pair of ornate lamps on a console for a warm, welcoming glow.

Then add something personal. Pair a carved mirror with a little tray for keys, tuck a framed botanical onto a shelf, or hang an unexpected piece of art.

  • A little sparkle and a sense of humor keep all those rich colors and dramatic details from feeling too serious.
