Designing the 2021 St. Jude Dream Home in Denver

2021 has been a notable year for many reasons, but one of the best has got to be that the 2021  St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway has sold out of tickets in record time! That’s right, for the first time ever the tickets for this year’s Giveaway have sold out before the Dream Home was opened to the public for weekend tours. To learn more about the Dream Home Giveaway, read our other post about it here.

For those who have not bought their tickets yet, the fact that this year’s Giveaway is sold out might come as a bit of a disappointment. There is one coveted prize that doesn’t require any kind of ticket to win: the $10,000 Furniture Row Shopping Spree! To win this prize, all you have to do is take a  tour of the Dream Home during one of the open house weekends. Once there, just register your name for the contest and you’ll be entered for a chance win. It’s that easy!

The 2021 Denver Dream Home

This year’s St. Jude Dream Home is presented by Oakwood Homes and is located at 17346 East 103rd Ave in the Reunion Subdivision of Commerce City, Colorado, just outside of Denver. With an estimated value of $820,000, the spacious, 43,000ft² Dream Home features seven bedrooms, four baths, an enlarged kitchen island, a great room with fireplace, a finished basement complete with activity room, a two car garage, and a covered patio.

Free tours of the home are available starting September 18th – October 17th, and the hours are Saturdays from 9:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. and Sundays from 12:00p.m. – 5:00p.m.

One of our favorite things about being a part of the Dream Home Giveaway is that we get to furnish the home with a variety of new, stylish pieces that you can find at Furniture Row®. In year’s past we have sent only one of our in-house designers to style the home, but this year’s home was designed by six designers working as a team.

The design team styled each and every room of this spacious, seven bedroom home, and they were kind enough to share their insights and inspirations with us. Use the link below to take a virtual tour of the home, and read on to learn more about their thought process and the home’s unique style!

A Style All Its Own

The designers for this year’s Dream Home were Barbara Chandler, Grace Karmel, Christine Thayer, Christine Gentz, Michelle Zehnle, and Michele Garner. Because this year’s Home is one of the largest that’s ever been offered, and because it was styled by a team, the designers wanted to use their skills to the fullest. Instead of one interior style, they decided to reach for the stars and pull in inspirations from three trending styles: Modern, Boho, and Farmhouse.

These three distinct styles are emphasized in some of the rooms more than others, but there are elements of each aesthetic in every room to give the home a unified look. This was not always an easy task to accomplish, and Grace Karmel offered some insight into how they made it work: “The house design pulls together bits of Boho, Modern, and Farmhouse to create a beautiful ascetic throughout the home. Natural woods and subdued colors with strong accents of deep blue carry a cohesive theme from room to room where eclectic textures are balanced with sleek, contemporary lines. Fun family elements can be found throughout, but a calm and relaxed aesthetic brings this design together from the upstairs bedrooms to the downstairs activity space.”

Modern Living

As mentioned, aspects of each of the design styles can be found throughout the home, but one of the best examples of the home’s modern look has got to be in the spacious living room.

According to Christine Thayer, “The entire house looks amazing, but the living room is my favorite. A bit different from the Boho-inspired bedrooms, the living room’s modern look is all about simplicity, flowing natural light, and bright punches of color.”

To achieve this eye-catching contemporary look, the designers asked the builders to repaint the entire fireplace a deep, dark blue to create a focal point. The designers placed two Liz Arm Chairs in front of the fireplace which are brand new to Furniture Row and offer stylish mid-century modern silhouettes. Next, they filled in the seating area with two streamlined sofas in a pebble gray finish, and they added additional throw pillows in complementary grey and beige tones to give the room a modern, monochromatic foundation. Finally, the designers used the area rug along with the vases atop the Allure coffee table to deliver some subtle splashes of color.

Boho Bedrooms

While many of the bedrooms carry the living room’s modern look throughout the rest of the home, the guest bedroom and the basement bedroom display the home’s Boho aesthetic best.

As Christine Thayer puts it, “Boho is all about natural materials, interesting textures, and accessories like plants and colorful art.”

In each of these rooms, the designers wanted to use beds showcasing clean-lined frames and wood in a natural finish, so they started with the Sandstone Bed in the guest room and the Front Door Storage Bed in the basement. From there, they opted for textured rugs under each of the beds, and they placed a variety of throw pillows with unique hand-woven patterns throughout the rooms. To complete the look, both of the bedrooms feature eye-catching art, intriguing accessories, and plenty of potted plants.

Farmhouse Comfort

Stepping into the kitchen and dining room immediately gives one a sense of farmhouse charm.

To create this aesthetic, the kitchen features a tiled backsplash, wood cabinets in a distressed chestnut finish, and its central island is surrounded by Harper Barstools which feature upholstered seats with classic nailhead trim. The designers wanted the dining room to offer a contemporary take on the farmhouse look so they paired The Edge Dining Set with the Flora Rug and modern accessories. The Edge Dining Table features a rustic live wood edge as well as a black steel trestle base, and the Flora Rug showcases a floral design that’s as comforting as it is stylish.

Final Thoughts

Although on paper it might seem difficult to incorporate such diverse looks into any one home, even a house as roomy as this year’s Dream Home, the final product is undeniably gorgeous and perfect for any family that appreciates a laid-back, contemporary aesthetic.

Barbara Chandler summed up the design team’s experience and the final design of the Dream Home perfectly: “The St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway has always held a special meaning, especially this year because everyone on the design team was able to use our skills and talents to do our part to help the children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

This year’s beautiful Oakwood home has multiple styles, and Furniture Row offered us so many options/choices of furniture, accessories, and art - it was a designer’s dream to decorate and it was a lot of fun! It’s a design that proves that it’s OK to bend the rules and have fun. The furniture incorporates interesting lines and unique shapes; The lamps, lighting, mirrors, and hardware showcase a mixture of metal finishes; and all of the wood used showcases a mix of light and dark finishes. But it all works together because it’s OK to mix styles, it’s OK to mix metals, and it's OK to mix wood finishes! Even with all of these different elements, the overall look and feel of the home ends up being soft, light, and modern.”

Remember, you can see this stunning home for yourself and enter for a chance to win the $10,000 Furniture Row shopping spree when you come to any of the Dream Home open house weekends from September 18th to October 17th. We hope to see you there!
