Whimsy is Taking Over (And We Have Photos to Prove it)

On the latest episode of Seated with Furniture Row, Barb and Jessa dug into all things whimsy - and Barb shared what she discovered firsthand on her travels to the world's biggest design markets. Here is what they found:
So, What Even Is Whimsy?
Whimsy is not chaos, and it is not just eclectic. At its core, whimsy is the intentional choice to bring objects and elements into your home that make you genuinely pause and grin. It is the design equivalent of a great unexpected accessory. Your foundational furniture is the outfit, and the one surprising, joyful detail is what makes the whole look come alive.
You can spot whimsy everywhere right now, from the window displays at Anthropologie and Saks Fifth Avenue (above) - where found objects, upcycled materials, and bold ceramics are arranged to stop you in your tracks - to the tomato-shaped vase on your neighbor's kitchen shelf.
Fearless Color and Pattern Combinations
Think unexpected pops of color: rich jewel tones, periwinkle paired with deep burgundy, bold stripes, checkerboards, and geometrics.
Accents That Make You Smile (On Purpose)
It’s also home accents that make you stop and smile --- food-shaped ceramics, sculptural pieces, and quirky furnishings that guests always pick up and ask about.
Whimsy on the World Stage
This spring, Barb attended two of the biggest design events in the world: the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City and the High Point Market in North Carolina. Both shows made one thing very clear --- the design industry is fully embracing whimsy right now, and the results are stunning.
Here is a look at the themes that stopped Barb in her tracks (long enough to take a picture, anyway).
Whimsy Themes
Theme 1 - Wilderkind is Where Animals Meet the Wild
One of the biggest themes of whimsy is something Barb and other designers are calling “wilderkind”, --- a playful mix of animal motifs and unexpected greenery that brings the outside world indoors in the most charming way.
Think painted dog portraits paired with trailing vines, ceramic birds nestled among potted plants, and lush botanical arrangements that feel more like a living art installation than a typical houseplant moment. It is whimsy rooted in nature, and it works across virtually every room in the house.
Theme 2 - Granny Chic is Officially in Season
China teacups, vintage-inspired ceramics, and "grandma's house" aesthetics have been fully reclaimed as chic --- and the design world is absolutely here for it.
Florals arranged inside teacups, mismatched vintage vessels clustered together on a tray, heirloom pieces pulled out of storage and given a place of honor in a modern space --- this is the "collected, not coordinated" feeling that makes a room feel personal and alive rather than showroom-staged.
The boldly tiled kitchen, the quirky salt-and-pepper shakers from grandma's cabinet, the china you actually put on display: granny chic is proof that the most whimsical things in your home might already be right in front of you.
Theme 3 - Light Up the Room (Literally)
Statement lighting and sculptural mirrors were everywhere at both markets, and for good reason --- nothing transforms the personality of a room faster than a fixture that doubles as art.
Tiffany-inspired lamps, globe shapes, wavy mirrors, and silhouettes that make you do a double take were all over the showroom floors. These are the pieces that make guests walk in and immediately ask "where did you get that?" --- and the answer is usually somewhere unexpected.
